Every year on March 22, the Board of Water Supply, the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services, the Resilience Office, and government agencies, businesses, and partners around the globe celebrate World Water Day. It's an annual United Nations Observance that celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people currently living without access to safe, clean drinking water.
The global water crisis affects everyone, but it hits women and girls hardest. When safe water and sanitation aren’t close to home, they’re often the ones collecting water and caring for family members who get sick—losing time, safety, health, and opportunity.
That’s why the water crisis is also a women’s crisis. Solutions must be rights-based and inclusive, with women represented in leadership and decision-making—helping shape every policy and every pipe.
On World Water Day 2026, let’s spotlight the link between water, women, and gender equality.
The more water used in our homes means more water to treat at the City's Department of Environmental Services wastewater treatment facilities.
