Lanikai Water System Improvements, Part II Project

MIRA Image Construction, LLC, the Board of Water Supply’s (BWS) contractor for the Lanikai Water System Improvements, Part II project is working to install approximately 1,455 feet of 16-inch water mains, 1,858 feet of 8-inch water mains, 200 feet of 6-inch water mains, and 180 feet of 4-inch water mains in the Lanikai and Kailua Beach areas.

The renewal of the water system will improve water service reliability and fire protection for customers in the area. Motorists are advised to expect slower than normal commute times.

PROJECT UPDATE

*Weather permitting, the contractor will be working to complete punchlist work on Mokolea Drive between Aalapapa Drive and Lanipo Drive and on Koohoo Place, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for observed state holidays. This schedule is subject to change. Motorists advised to anticipate possible traffic delays.

Phase III: Anticipated start date 9.29.21. Anticipated completion date 1.7.22.

  • Work will occur on the makai side of the Kailua Beach Park bridge. 
  • Motorists should expect an intermittent contraflow as crews install new water main on the bridge.
  • Traffic lanes near the Kailua Beach Park bridge will be closed on an occasional basis.

Phase IV: Anticipated start date 9.22.21 and will run concurrently along with Phase II. Anticipated completion date is 1.31.22.

  • Work will occur on Alala Rd heading toward Lanikai.
  • Motorists should expect delays as the traffic lanes will be contraflowed as crews install new water main.

Phase V: Anticipated start date 10.30.21. Anticipated completion date 12.14.21.

  • Work will occur on Kawailoa Rd.
  • Motorists and area residents are advised to expect traffic delays.

Night Work

  • The BWS has applied for a noise variation for parts of the project.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

  • The project will install approximately 1,455 feet of 16-inch water mains, 1,858 feet of 8-inch water mains, 200 feet of 6-inch water mains, and 180 feet of 4-inch water mains.
     
  • The project will affect the following areas:
    • Kalaheo Avenue from Kailua Road to Kawailoa Road
    • Kawailoa Road from Lihiwai Road to Popoia Road
    • Kawailoa Road from Alala Road to dead end
    • Mokolea Drive between Aalapapa Drive and Lanipo Drive
    • Koohoo Place between Aalapapa Drive and dead end
  • Road work hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

This project will involve traffic modifications and lane closures along the work site. When the project begins road users are advised to obey all traffic controls, posted signs, and special duty officers.
