BWS Review of EPA Proposed Rule
HONOLULU – The Board of Water Supply (BWS) is reviewing the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed rule for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
For both PFOA and PFOS, chemicals that have been linked to cancer, the proposed maximum contaminant limit (MCL) is being set at 4 parts per trillion. For four PFAS chemicals (PFHxS, PFNA, PFBS and HFPO-D), EPA has proposed a hazard index of 1 to protect public health from mixtures of these chemicals that may occur in drinking water. According to EPA the hazard index represents the level at which no known or anticipated adverse effects on health is expected to occur and allows for an adequate margin of safety.
This rule is not final and still needs to go through the Federal review process with the EPA starting a 60-day public comment period on the proposal, which started on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, when it was published in the Federal Register.
