BWS to Observe World Water Day

HONOLULU – The Board of Water Supply (BWS) will join government and private agencies around the world to recognize World Water Day on Sunday, March 22, 2026. Since 1993, the United Nations has observed World Water Day to highlight the importance of fresh water and raise awareness of the billions of people worldwide who lack access to safe drinking water.

World Water Day 2026

This year’s theme, “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” stresses the close connection between water, sanitation, and gender equality. In places where safe drinking water and sanitation are not close to home, women and girls often bear the greatest burden.

“Having access to safe, dependable water is fundamental to support public health, economic opportunity, and quality of life,” said BWS Manager and Chief Engineer Ernie Lau. “World Water Day reminds us that protecting and sustaining our water resources benefits everyone. This builds stronger, more resilient communities today and for generations to come.”

To mark this observance, throughout the month of March, the BWS will share the following activities and resources with Oʻahu residents:

  • Videos, stories, and educational materials: Go to www.boardofwatersupply.com/wwd and watch short video vignettes, read articles, and explore inspirational stories about the impacts of the global water and sanitation crisis, which affects everyone – though not equally.
  • Find out how you can make a difference by conserving water, reducing waste, and mitigating climate change today and in the future.
  • Social media outreach: Follow the BWS (@BWSHonolulu) all month long to learn about World Water Day.

For more information on World Water Day, please contact the Board of Water Supply’s Communications Office at (808) 748-5040 or email contactus@hbws.org.
