Boil Water Notice for Pūpūkea Rd to Turtle Bay Has Been Lifted - March 24, 4:00 PM Update

HONOLULU – The Board of Water Supply received the first set of water quality test results this afternoon.  The results were negative for bacteriological contamination and the boil water notice for the system that serves the following areas has been lifted:

  • All of Pūpūkea
  • All of Sunset Beach
  • Waialeʻe
  • Turtle Bay Resort
  • Kuilima Estates East and West

These communities are now free to consume the water without boiling it first. The water has been verified safe to drink.

These are the only communities that have been cleared. South of Pūpūkea Rd heading to Haleʻiwa and including Waialua and parts of Mokuleʻia that are served by the BWS, are still under a boil water notice. Water samples for testing for these areas has been collected, and results are expected by tomorrow afternoon. Residents in these communities must continue to boil the water before using it for consumption. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, making ice, and oral hygiene should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for three minutes. The BWS will announce when it is no longer necessary to boil the water.

Protecting the health of the community and ensuring the safety of BWS customers is of utmost importance, so at this time, the BWS is unable to estimate when it can lift the boil water notice.  Meanwhile, the patience and understanding of the community is appreciated and the BWS will continue to issue updates on this matter as they become available.

Until water from the BWS system can be safely consumed, water tankers are available at the following locations for customers who need water.

  • Waialua Community Association at 66-434 Kamehameha Hwy.
  • Waialua District Park Recreation Center at 67-180 Goodale Ave.

The tanker at Banzai Skate Park at 59-460 Kamehameha Hwy will be removed later today as water for this system is now safe to drink.

Regarding the water tankers:

  • Please bring your own containers to fill up. Mahalo!
  • They are available to customers 24/7.
  • If a tanker is not there, it is being refilled and will return as soon as possible. It will be there until further notice.

Residents should stay tuned to news reports and consider signing up to receive email, text message or push notification alerts from BWS and other emergency response agencies through the HNLAlert app. Sign up at hnlalert.gov.
