Board of Water Supply Launches New WaterWisdom Program to Help Condominiums and Townhome Complexes Improve Their Water Conservation Efforts

HONOLULU –  The Red Hill water contamination incident last November has increased the community’s awareness about the value of clean, potable water and the need to be more aware about conserving this precious resource.

However, many resident managers and property managers often find themselves in a quandary. They may want to conserve water and reduce their water bills, but individual residents and tenants may not be aware of water conservation concerns, especially if the cost of their water usage is included in their maintenance fee, homeowners association fee, or rent. Additionally, their lump sum monthly fee may include fees for sewer, other utility services, amenities, or common areas.

“We understand the challenges property and resident managers face and we’re glad to be partnering with them to help them to successfully lower their water usage,” said Ernest Lau, Manager and Chief Engineer of the Board of Water Supply. “There is room for water conservation at every large condominium, apartment, townhome complex, and multi-unit community throughout O‘ahu. Collectively, this can have a tremendous impact in lowering our islandwide water use.”

The Board of Water Supply’s timely ‘WaterWisdom’ program, which launches on Feb. 7, will give resident and property managers a free comprehensive toolkit to help them succeed. In addition to mini-posters on practical ways managers and their residents or tenants can conserve water, the Board of Water Supply is also encouraging property and resident managers to sign up for its WaterSmart program, which enables managers to access customized information to track the water use for their building or complex and even provides alerts for the early detection of possible leaks to avoid costly and disruptive emergency repairs.

The Board of Water Supply will recognize the property and residents managers of the top five multi-unit communities that show the most improvement in water conservation for the year.
