Diacriticals
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply, City and County of Honolulu (BWS), recognizes the use of diacritical markings of the (modern) Hawaiian language including the ‘okina [‘] or glottal stop and the kahakō [ō] or macron (e.g., in place names of Hawai‘i such as O‘ahu or Hālawa). As part of City efforts to preserve the language and culture of Hawai‘i, the BWS uses these diacritical markings in printed communications. Every effort is made to ensure the best online experience for our website visitors, and where possible incorporate the use of diacritical markings in new or updated content and to support onsite searches with or without the markings. However, website visitors may notice these markings may not be used in archived content sections and documents that are for reference, research or recordkeeping purposes and will not be updated..
